Kham Tour in East Tibet

Kham Tour in East Tibet: Kham is a land apart from the rest of Tibet. Its climate, geography, flora, funa and isolation all end it a unique, almost magical atmosphere. Traditional life seems less disturbed here than in central Tibet. The stone village and vertical prayer flags resemble those in Bhutan and the unusually shaped chortens (stupa) seem more at home in Mustang. The scenery often resembles more the Swiss Alps or Rocky Mountains than the high Tibetan plateau.

History
The area around Chamdo was one of the first settled in Tibet, as attested to by the 5000-years-old Neolithic remains at nearby Karo. Fossilised millet hints at a 5000-years tradition of agriculture in the region.

Kham was the home of many holy men including the founders of the Drigungpa and Karmapa School. In 1070 many Buddhist fled persecution in central Tibet to Kham, where they set up influential monasteries, later returning to central Tibet to appear head the so-called second diffusion of Buddhism in Tibet. On this Kham Tour in East Tibet program you can also explore Drikung Thil and Drikung Thil monastery which lies 150 KM North east from Lhasa.

Doleshwar Mahadev abode of Lord Shiva; lies at Bhaktapur district, for the last 4,000 years, devotees have been searching for the missing head of Lord Kedarnath, who assumed the form of a bull in a pastime with the five Pandava brothers. In recent years it was determined by temple priests that the deity at Doleshwar was indeed the missing head of Kedarnath Bull. After the Battle of Kurukshetra, the Pandavas renounced their kingdom and departed for the high Himalayas. Upon reaching the Kedarnath region, they wished to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva for the loss of lives that took place during the 18-day war. But Lord Shiva was not ready to forgive them, and he took the form of a bull in order to avoid them. The Pandavas soon realized that the bull was Shiva himself, and tried to stop it from running away by pulling on his tail. Suddenly the head became separated from the body of the bull, and the Pandavas were unable to find the head.

Since that time, the hump-backed linga at Uttarakhand Kedarnath Temple has been worshipped as the torso of that divine Bull, but the head was never reclaimed. Devotees have been searching for the head since the Mahabharata Period, believing it to be hidden in the Himalayas. It was not until 2009 that temple priests determined that the deity at Doleshwar Mahadev Temple in Nepal is indeed the long-missing head of Kedarnath.
